Source of Coenzyme Q10
Coenzyme Q10 is a lipophilic molecule composed of an isoprenoid side chain and a redox-active center (quinone structure).
Due to its lipophilicity, Coenzyme Q10 easily penetrates cell membranes to reach the inside of cells, and is particularly easily enriched in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it plays an important role as an electron carrier in the electron transport chain.
Principle of Coenzyme Q10
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are more easily produced after ultraviolet exposure and mitochondrial DNA (MT DNA) mutations or deletions, stimulating the expression of collagen and elastin degrading enzymes (i.e., matrix metalloproteinases), leading to skin sagging and aging.
To eliminate ROS, our mitochondria contain scavenging enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase, as well as various antioxidants. One important antioxidant is Coenzyme Q10 (Co-Q10), also known as ubiquinone.
